Toy Collecting Information
Collecting toys is considered by many to be a very dynamic and, to some, very fulfilling. It may not be that apparent, but this hobby can actually take you to other towns, cities, and even countries while you search for the best toys to add to your collection. Thus, if you are thinking of a way to spend your time (and money) in a fun manner, consider exploring toy collecting.
Toy collecting is essentially an art; you may even consider it a science, wherein you need to perform adequate research for you to acquire the best toys around. You should be artistic in the sense that you should know how to judge real beauty. When the art and science in toy collecting are combined, you can expect a fulfilling toy collecting experience. Before the time of the Internet, you had to travel around looking for the greatest finds out there. Now, all you need to do is sit down in front of your computer, log on to the Internet and start researching about toy collecting and the options in store for you. Through the Internet, you can easily find fellow toy lovers as well as sellers who put their toy collectibles for auction online. The online toy market does not only offer new toys that are on trend. You may also get difficult finds such as vintage toys and limited edition units.
When it comes to toy collecting, there are two main factors that may affect your decision. These are your own taste and how good the condition of the toy is.
Your Taste
Every toy collector has his/her own taste when it comes to the toys that they will purchase and add to their collection. Some may find this peculiar – how can you use a term for food when talking about toys? Well, collecting toys is the very essence of the hobby. Thus, you also ‘consume’ something in this hobby – the beauty and fulfillment that a toy can provide. As a toy collector, you cannot help but savor the appearance and the form of toys. You see them as an artwork filled with color, detail and beauty.
Variety is an important aspect in toy collection. In fact, variety can make your toy collection highly valuable. This is because as you collect more toys through searching with all your might from garage sales up to the high-end toy stores, it is likely that you will get rare finds.
It is true that not many toy collectors are willing to give up or resell their toys after acquiring them. A lot of toy collectors would feel and stay proud of the huge space in their home that is filled with nothing but toys. Many would not see the need to dispose of any item in their collection.
The Toys’ Condition – Mint and Near Mint
Toy collectors eventually need to be cautious with the condition of the toys that they are looking to add to their collection. If you are an avid collector of vintage and special edition units, it is ideal that you get mint-condition toys. Mint-condition toys are virtually new toys that have not been opened by the previous owner/s. An item may also be considered as mint-condition if the packaging has been opened but the toy itself is not taken out or played with. Basically, those that have intact packaging are sold at higher prices and if you intend to resell them, you can mark it higher even.
Vintage toys from the 60’s or earlier that have been well-preserved are typically in mint condition but without the packaging. However, there are others that are preserved so well that even the carton is intact. The latter is eventually more expensive than the former.
The other condition that you should know of is “near mint.” Toys that have never been played with but no longer have its original packaging are graded near mint. As long as the toys’ parts are complete and working properly, it can still be considered near mint. Vintage toys that need to be assembled from its box are typically considered as near mint because its packaging is probably worn out already, if not, totally lost.
